Bringing Joy to Bathtime: Designing Skincare for the Whole Family.

This project was all about making bathtime easier and more enjoyable for families – from the littlest splashers to their grown-up helpers.

The Challenge: Filling the Gap in Family Skincare

b.box wanted to dive into the world of skincare, aiming to address the needs of modern families with premium, aesthetically pleasing, and affordable products. This presented the design challenge of creating a cohesive family of bottles for lotions, oils, and creams with refillable cartridges and pouches to promote sustainability.

Target Audience & Personas

To ensure a user-centric design, I identified three key personas representing different stages of family life:

  1. Health-Conscious Mums-to-Be: Value natural ingredients and sustainable choices.
  2. First-Time Mums: Prioritize safety and seek guidance on newborn care.
  3. Experienced Mums: Juggle busy lives and seek convenient, high-quality products.

The Solution: A Cohesive Family of Refillable Skincare Bottles

The b.box body skincare range is a thoughtfully curated family of products designed to nourish and protect the skin of all ages. It features three 350ml lotion bottles for soothing, hydrating, and cleansing, a 150ml oil bottle for nourishing the skin, and a special airless jar for protecting delicate areas with a nappy and barrier cream
But we didn't stop there! To make things even better for families and the planet, I also developed replacement cartridges for the nappy cream and handy 750ml refill pouches for each of the lotions. This means less waste and more value for your money, making bathtime a breeze for everyone involved.

The Process: Bridging Design and Production

I initially proposed a friendly penguin-shaped design but pivoted to custom bottles with white-label pumps due to financial constraints. This approach aligned with b.box's brand and design language while remaining cost-effective.
Leveraging FDM and SLA 3D printing for rapid prototyping, I quickly iterated and refined the design, achieving a soft, rounded aesthetic that reflected the premium nature of the skincare range. Collaborating closely with manufacturers, I ensured the design was feasible for production and developed comprehensive technical specifications and drawings for tooling.
Seeing the final design come to life in those soft, rounded square bottles was super rewarding. It really captured the essence of the premium ingredients inside.

Intellectual Property: Safeguarding Design Innovation

Protecting the design was important, so I helped the legal team officially register the designs of each bottle. That meant drafting all the technical specs and drawings, ensuring they met the rigorous rules in each of the over 15 juristictions the design is now protected in.
Below are some of the jurisdictions in which the design registrations were granted:

Software Used

CAD - Solidworks
Rendering - Keyshot
Post - Adobe Photoshop
IP Documentation - Solidworks, Adobe Illustrator, Keyshot & Microsoft Word

Results & Impact: A New Chapter in Family Care

The b.box body skincare range launched in Australia to widespread acclaim, receiving over 5 awards for its innovative design and family-friendly appeal. The product line has since expanded globally, reaching families worldwide. This success underscores the effectiveness of a user-centric design approach prioritising both functionality and sustainability. I am proud to have played a significant role in developing this product family, contributing to b.box's ongoing mission to support families in their everyday lives.
